Thinning with paraffin is recommended for higher speed finishing cuts to keep the workpiece and tools as cool as possible.<\/li><li>The depth of cut must be such as to prevent the tool from riding in the workpiece. This is particularly important with austenitic grades to avoid work hardening and burnishing.<\/li><li>The largest possible tool must be used in order to dissipate heat.<\/li><li>Interrupted cutting must be avoided where possible as a greater degree of work hardening occurs as the tool enters the workpiece. The prime rule should be &#8220;get in and get out&#8221; with all tooling.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2>Stainless Steel Machining Tool Geometry<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Tool geometries are similar for both austenitic and ferritic grades and the summarized below for HSS:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>DRILLING:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p> Cutting edge angel \u00b1 135\u00b0, point angel \u00b1 138\u00b0, lip relief angle varies from 16\u00b0 for 3mm diameter to 8\u00b0 for 25mm diameter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>REAMING:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Rake angle 3\u00b0 to 8\u00b0, margin width 0.125 to 0.35mm, relief angles primary 4\u00b0 to 6\u00b0, secondary double primary chamfer angle 30\u00b0 to 35\u00b0, chamfer relief angle 4\u00b0 to 5\u00b0, helix angle \u00b1 7\u00b0, lead angle \u00b1 2\u00b0.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>TAPPING:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Straight fluted for > 12mm holes, spiral fluted for smaller holes hook\/rake angle 15\u00b0 to 20\u00b0, back relief angle 10\u00b0, chamfer angle\/length plug taps 9\u00b0 to 10\u00b0 (3.5 to 4.5 threads) taper taps 4\u00b0 to 5\u00b0, (8 to 10 threads).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>DIE THREADING:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Rake angle 20\u00b0 to 30\u00b0, throat angle 20\u00b0 to 25\u00b0, face angle 1.5\u00b0.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>SINGLE POINT TURNING:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Back rake angle ferritics 5\u00b0, austenitic 0\u00b0, side rake angle ferritics 8\u00b0, austenitics 10\u00b0 to 15\u00b0, end relief, side relief and end cutting edge angles all 5\u00b0.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>FORM TURNING:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Back rake angle 4\u00b0 to 10\u00b0, end relief angles 7\u00b0 to 10\u00b0, side relief and clearance angles 1\u00b0 to 5\u00b0.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>CUT OFF TOOLS:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Back rake angle 6\u00b0 to 10\u00b0, end relief angle 7\u00b0 to 10\u00b0, side relief angle 2\u00b0 to 3\u00b0, end cutting edge angle 10\u00b0 to 15\u00b0 for small diameters and shallow cuts, decreasing to 5\u00b0 for larger diameters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>CUTTING FLUIDS<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Sulphurised, chlorinated or sulphur-chlorinated mineral oils and emulsifiable oils are used. In cases of high pressure the latter must contain sulphonated or chlorinated additions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>CLEANING<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>After machining it is essential to remove the cutting fluid and degrease the workpiece. This is usually done with conventional degreasing agents or solvents. In situations where the workpiece has been subjected to excessive heating or where maximum corrosion resistance is required, it may be necessary to passivate and\/or pickle and passivate.
